Default Comparative religion for pre-school kids?!

Hello,

I am CoE-turned-atheist with agnostic leanings and DP is atheist with absolutely no religious background whatsoever.

Naomi will probably end up going to a CofE playschool because that's what most of them are round here, so she will pick up bits and pieces about Christianity, and I want her to know the Christmas story for cultural reasons. She is two now so I would like her to see a nativity play or Carol service this year.

However, I'd also like her to know about Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism, Judaism, Buddhism, Paganism and Humanism, perhaps I am being ambitious given that she's only a toddler?

Can anyone recommend any books? These are what I've found on Amazon so far:

Hi Judith,
I don't think you're being too ambitious at all, I really believe that the earlier a child is introduced to the idea of all different kinds of religions, the better the chance of them fully understanding that there are different cultures and that different people have different beliefs and that that's OK.

I know that at Daniel's pre-school, they do indeed cover all sorts of religions. This continues when they get to school, for example, next week we are going to an Eid party in Megan's school.

I don't know what sort of books they use in Daniel's pre-school, but I'll try and find out for you, if you'd like.

Love,
Sharon.

Wow, Julie, what a terrific site! The book "Reading Roundabout Faiths" looks very good, it says suitable for "early years". I'll definitely bookmark this site! Thanks.

Hi Judith,

Naomi 2, surely not it was only yesterday when she was born??

Like Sharon my experience of education for children is multi faith. My dd went to a church school but she has always been aware of different religons as it's discussed. I've always loved the way that young children taken on different religons and cultures.

Its the same for us, my 2 older children have learnt about other religions in school. My oldest son's primary was a CE controlled school, Matthew goes to a convent so they tend to focus on Catholicism, apols if thats misspelt.

Without offending anyone I would just like to say that out of my 2 oldest boys its my 10 year old who knows more about christianity and the bible, IMO my oldest son's secondary school spent far far too much time on Islam, he spent 2 terms on it, whereas his knowledge about the bible etc is non-existent.

I am all for teaching children all about religions, but firmly believe the emphasis should be on our own home grown faiths iyswim.

Love
Liz
