There's a news article that I think you should all read.
Whilst I can take most of these types of comment in my stride, this article is making me cross. It's regarding research published by the same woman (Dr Susan Bewley, consultant obstetrician at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospital in London) as the last time there was a real fuss in the press about older mothers. However, these latest comments might have come from the same research and it's just that the Sunday Times has suddenly jumped on the bandwagon this week and decided to follow it up. [Aside: interestingly, according to 'The Guardian', neither Dr Bewley nor her research accomplice will tell the press how old they are, or at what age they had children. However, I do know that Dr Bewley definitely has a child]. Source: Sunday Times (UK) August 13, 2006

I'd love to meet some of these people, just to give them a mouthful,
there certainly will be a public health problem caused by one older mum at least, only it wouldnt have anything to do with childbirth love ann |

You know this really pisses me off ! it makes the assumption that any older woman having her first child in late 30s or early 40s chose for it to be that way. She put her "dynamic" career first! OK whilst it may be true in some cases they should never generalise.
If my ex-hubby had been able to father kids I'd would probably have had mine 15 years ago, but he couldn't and I resigned myself to never having children. It was only when I met my current DH that it become an option for me - I was 40 when I met him and clearly didn't want to rush in to having a baby immediately as you need to be sure (well as much as you can be !) you have the right man ! Just over a year ago I decided I was ready, but even then, due to the attitude of a lot of people I was very cautious, and I have to say it was finding this board a year ago and reading all the wonderful stories that gave me the hope and confidence to go for it. This doctor is a very controversial figure anyway.
Notice she forgot to mention what a financial strain teenage mothers are on the benefits system after the birth ... Liz x |

What an amazingly arrogant woman! We don't all have the luxury of having a child when these people want us to. They always make it sound like we have children in "middle age" as the selfish option, as if we are fitting the child in at a convenient time to our own design.
I cannot believe this woman could possibly have said this if she knew first-hand the desparate want to have a child while you feel your body clock ticking loudly at every waking moment of the day. When it happens, it's not a medical burden, it's a bloody wonderful miracle. God gives us the chance of conceiving right up until menopause and the choice of taking advantage of this gift is ours and no-one elses. *snarl" nothing like a good rant on a Monday!Janice xx |

Stupid crap shit piece of fluff with no facts to back it up, this is classic gutter journalism meant to garner a reaction and gain attention for the paper.
What a heap of trash. |
