Well it's only 3 days away now and last night I did not sleep a wink!
I'm trying to figure out a way I can get the GP to use a doppler first so I don't have the shock of waiting for the scan to show there is nothing there The next thing is that well if there is something there then the NT measurement will be high... I think when you've been trying for 6 years and you finally get what you want so badly, it may make you lose a few brain cells along the way !!I am trying my very best to stay positive and all the signs that everything is fine are here, but can I put those doubts aside... not a chance! Hoping I can return Thursday afternoon to share my good news with you all and stop bloody moaning ![]() Claire x |

Hi Claire
I understand how you are feeling - it is completely normal to be anxious. I am anxious waiting for my scans - worrying that nothing will be there or something will be wrong if there is but all we can do is wait and see and try to stay positive (easy for me to say I know). I am sure all will be fine with you .Are you around 12 weeks now?? - if so I thought that you can't always get a good result from a doppler at that stage (might be mistaken though), not sure if baby has moved up high enough yet. Hope you can try and relax - it really takes the excitement off doesn't it all this stressing .Take care J

Awww I can totally understand how your feeling. Call your midwife and ask her to see you the day before just to settle your nerves.
When I got as far as the nuchal I just told the dr about the mc history and bad scans I'd had and how worried I was. He turned away the screen and he looked first, then turned back the screen and said it all looks just fab. It was a total relief, so just have a word and I'm sure they will be very understanding if the mw wont see you first.

Hi Claire
I know exactly what you mean - imagine me at 44 going in for my first nuchal scan, first baby, having had a m/c a few months earlier. I just couldn't look at the screen and it was only when DH started blubbing and saying oh my god there is our baby that I turned me head to see the screen. Then I started boo-ing - it was like saturday night at the wailing wall ! Thing is hun, if you you're just having nuchal on its own - with no bloods - you may get a high risk just cos of your age so even if you do it doesn't mean you have to get all panickey and worried. My NHS trust don't do anything other than nuchal so without the blood tests to check for other markers my risk was high, but I'm here to tell you I have a 2 and half year old lad that is as right as rain and trickier than a barrel full of monkeys. Fact is when I asked them what my risk would have been if I had been say 34 and not 44 the difference was incredible - so the measurements themselves were fine, it was all age related. If I got pg again I would go to the fetal medicine centre in Harley Street to have the full scan and blood tests - may cost a few quid but I'd definately do it. Have a look at Debbie's recent posts as I know she went there for scans. Good luck and I look forward to reading a happy post on Thursday Love D X |

Hi Claire, just want to wish you good luck for Thursday's nuchal scan.
I know what you mean about worrying that nothing will be there, as I felt like that when I had an early scan at 8 week. I went to Baby Bond in Chelmsford, as I wanted to get exact dates so I could have the nuchal scan at the right time. Dee was right I had my nuchal scan at the Fetal Medicine Centre and also a private anomoly scan there and I can't rate them highly enough, the staff were brilliant there. I'm sure everything will be fine, and I'm sure all of us have felt this way before the first scan. Good luck. Love Debbiexx

Hello,
I may ask sonographer to turn screen away or I may just look away! We had 8 week scan at Babybond too and I couldn't look then until hubby said it was there! The NT scan is NHS and at St John's (Debbie - you may know St John's?) I really wanted to go to the Fetal Medicine centre but figured as this is free and we've already paid for the 8 week one then lets get something for nothing!! The midwife did give me a Down's screening envelope that I assume I take to the scan with me on Thursday... thinking about it I'm not sure if it's done at the same time? - mmm maybe I'll give her a call! Funnily enough this morning laying in bed, I have just discovered my bump! It's the most peculiar feeling, it's our baby in there!! Hubby skipped off happily to work this morning, even in the rain! Thanks for the support ladies, really appreciate it! Claire x |

I can sympathise with the nerves, I was the same before scans with each of my 2 youngest babies. (When I had my older 2, now 15 and 9 I was in blissful ignorance of what could go wrong and had no fears before the scan). In fact with Joshua my newest baby I had no pregnancy symptoms no bump or anything so wasn't really expecting to see anything on the 12 week scan. Ask your sonographer to check for the nasal bone, it is a good marker for downs as the majority of downs babies do not have a nasal bone. Hope it all goes well!! Love Liz xx

I think we have all been there, I bought a doppler at 7 weeks and I still used it up to giving birth!! I crossed every day off as a day closer it helped me to stop fretting and getting over anxious, I am sure all the nerves will settle as you get bigger and bigger, sendign you lots of (((Hugs))))

I can really sympathise with you on the nerves - I was a wreck going in (and then limp with relief after the first words out of the sonographer's mouth were "ah, there it is, heart beating away").
I was really lucky in that my local hospital (Hinchingbrooke in Cambs) does NT for free. So combined with the blood tests, I got an accurate (and, luckily, really low) probability of Downs. I definitely wouldn't feel so sanguine if I'd only had one or the other test. I'm sure everything will be fine for you (which is what everyone said to me and I didn't believe them!) I have my 20 week scan next week (I won't be quite 20 weeks but I'm due on holiday the week after), which I'm still nervous about - though not as much as for the 13 week one. I think being worried just goes with the territory. Let us know how it goes. |
