What a beautifully written article. I have to say (and not knowing nearly as much about the issues as John does) that I totally understand the Scots who want independence and I personally think they would be much better off. I can remember in the 'Thatcher Years' when no constituency in Scotland voted Conservative and yet they had to endure years of Conservative government, and at the time I couldn't think how that could possibly be right. Having visited Southern Ireland and seen how they are able to be a proper part of Europe, and work this to their advantage with the grants and social supports and development aid their country is able to access, as opposed to an anti-European wanabee extra member of the United States, which is what English politicians turn GB into, I see no reason why Scotland could not survive on its own as an active and positive member of the European Union. If Scotland left the Union the loss would be all on the GB side, with us being a smaller unit with consequently less clout ourselves and unable to have any free access to any lovely oil that might be found off that Scottish Coast. If I were a Scot I would vote for Independence, as an English person I am torn, as what is best for us English is not best for Scotland, in my personal (and largely uninformed) opinion.
