....Well ladies just received my first delivery of Soapnuts and the first load of washing is finished. Just as 'they' promise the washing is lovely and soft [didn't use any fabric softener this time to see how they worked - the instructions say that softener is not needed]. This is amazing because I washed jeans and they usually go like cardboard with no softener.
There is no smell at all except the smell of 'clean'. Not musty or scented just nothing really. If I wanted a fragrant smell I think I'd put a tiny amount of fabric softener in for the scent rather than the effect. So Emer and Janice - how did you get on with yours??? I'll do a few more loads of different colours [especially whites which are always a challenge ] and let you know how long the shells last and how clean the clothes are on various washes. I'll also be keeping an eye on Ethan's excema which is very good anyway at the moment. Here is the link once again for those who are interested in getting a free sample...... http://www.inasoapnutshell.com love to all Sharon xx |

Hi Sharon,
I haven't tried mine yet, yes, I have washed some clothes but I'm using up my old Ecover liquid first. It's very interesting to read what you found, they sound good. I'll let you know how I get on!Janice xx |

...I have to confess to not using up my old non-bio stuff first.
Couldn't wait to use them so will have to use up the other another time . I'm sure there'll be stains that the soapnuts can't handle but we'll see, maybe I'm just being a pessimist. The washing I did is nearly dry now and is still soft. I did wonder if it would 'harden' up on drying but apparently not.I reckon towells will be the biggest 'soft test' as some old ones get really crispy without conditioner don't they??? Watch this space guys... Sharon xx |

.....have done a load of bedding which I always do on a 60 degree cycle as I do towells [everything else I do on a 30 or 40 degree cycle] and today I did two loads of whites on a 40 degree wash and all is fine.
The bedding is white as well and came up lovely. The whites are good, the same stubborn stains are still there that would be for a non-bio, ie some sox that have been hammered and the odd pair of undies that AF got to before I realised she was lingering [apologies if tmi] but as I said this would have been the case with my non-bio so I'm really impressed. I just shoved the stubborn stuff back in for the second load and it's come up fine.I'm using a couple of teaspoons of conditioner just for the fragrance tho as everything is still coming up soft. Not using the concentrated softener just a normal strength ASDA cheapy but usually I would use the eco friendly Tesco range concentrated fabric softener and would probably only use one teaspoon of that for this purpose. Surprisingly it's enough to give a hint of perfume to the wash. I'm still on my first lot of soapnuts so they've now done four washes and I'll have to look and see if they'll go another. Apparently if you squeeze them and some foam appears at their edges then they'll go again. Keep watching oh faithful ones lol.................still not done towells and I think that'll be interesting. love S xx |

....making your own out of an old muslin nappy?? You could make loads with just one.
I'm sure if you contacted the soapnuts company they'd send you a little bag - strange that you didn't get one. with love S xx |

.....well I did six loads with my 7 little half shells of soapnuts and they were still foaming at the edges [which is a sign that they're still good to go again apparently] but I composted those and have started a new lot this morning. Am still using my tiny bit of fabric softener for the fragrance alone.
Have to say that I'm really impressed with them. I was a bit dubious but they really do what they say on the tin as it were. I must point out tho that my machine [or rather Si's old machine] is an ancient one and it does quite short cycles in comparison to most 'new' machines which seem to take at least 60 - 90 mins to do a load. Ours does a load easily in under an hour which makes me wonder that maybe the 'nuts' wouldn't last so many washes if the cycles took longer?? Just an observation!!! Looking forward to hearing how you're all getting on with yours. with love S xx |
